August 20, 2012

Plans for our first full week of school....

In English this week:
All students should go to the bookspot link on my webpage and register as we will be blogging about our independent books on this site.
Ed. Performance testing on Reading and Lang. in the computer lab Mon., Tues., and Wed.
Share the brochure we created about ourselves to get to know each other better
Begin reading logs (see directions below)
Logs handed out Mondays  (this week Aug. 20)
Logs returned the following Monday  (this week Aug. 27)
Students must read 90 minutes outside of class, record the minutes, pages, and reflect on their reading.
Parents must sign the bottom of the log before it is turned in.
We will also read in class, but those minutes do not count toward the 90.
Rational:   Research says that if we read 30 minutes each day, we will build our vocabulary by 3,000 words each year : )   With in class reading and the 90 minutes we should be close to the 30 : )

On Friday, we will create our name tags for our writing gallery this year.  Students may bring yarn or ribbon of their choice to create the name tags.  I will also have yarn and ribbon here they can use if they wish.
Discuss in a mini-lesson the good behaviors of readers and writers

In Reading this week:
We will continue talking about social groups and begin reading The Outsiders
